Sound Deadening vs Soundproofing — What Is the Difference?

Sound deadening and soundproofing are often used interchangeably — but they describe fundamentally different things, and understanding the distinction will help you choose the right product.

Sound Deadening

Sound deadening refers to reducing vibration and resonance in a surface — most commonly in vehicle applications. CLD (constrained layer damping) mats, like those in our vehicle range, deaden panel vibration by converting mechanical energy into heat. The result is reduced panel resonance and road noise in a vehicle.

Soundproofing

Soundproofing refers to reducing the transmission of sound between spaces — rooms in a building, floors in a flat. This involves mass, absorption, and decoupling. Our 6mm rubber acoustic underlay is a soundproofing product — it reduces sound transmission between floor levels.

Which Do You Need?

  • Vehicle (car, van, campervan) → sound deadening → CLD mats
  • Building (flat, house, office) → soundproofing → acoustic underlay + mineral wool + system
  • Both → we stock both — browse our full range

Our site covers both. For building soundproofing, our 6mm underlay and 12mm system are the starting points. For vehicles, see our vehicle sound deadening range.
